Can working women and housewives buy LIC term insurance? This 2026 guide explains eligibility, women-specific considerations, LIC term plan choices and how to estimate your family’s protection needs.

Can Women Buy LIC Term Insurance?
Yes. Women can buy LIC term insurance if they meet the rules of the plan they choose. LIC even says its new Jeevan Raksha plan (Plan 894) is also available for housewives, subject to conditions.
But there is no one plan that is right for every woman. A working woman, a mother of two, a woman with her own business and a homemaker all have different needs.
So start with three simple questions:
- Who depends on my money or my care?
- How much money would my family need if I am not there?
- Which LIC plan can I actually get?
What Is Term Insurance? (The Simple Version)
Term insurance is like an umbrella for your family’s money.
You pay a small amount every year. If you pass away during the years of the policy, LIC pays a fixed amount of money to your family. If you live through the whole period, you get nothing back. That is why it costs much less than savings plans.
Why Women Should Think About Term Insurance
Life insurance is not only for the person who earns the most in the family.
Working women: Think of Priya, 32, who earns ₹70,000 a month. She helps pay the home loan, her son’s school fees and her parents’ medicines. If her income stopped, her family would struggle.
Married women with children: Many families plan around two incomes. If one income stops, EMIs, school fees and daily costs can become hard to pay. So both husband and wife should check their own cover.
Single mothers: A single mother often carries every money decision alone. Her children depend on her completely.
Women supporting parents: An unmarried woman who looks after her parents may need cover just as much as a married woman.
Homemakers: A homemaker does not get a salary, but her work has real value. Cooking, school runs, caring for children and elders all cost money if someone else has to do them.
When do you NOT need much term insurance?
If nobody depends on your money, you have no loans, and you have enough savings for any duties left, you may not need big cover. Insurance should solve a real problem. Don’t buy it just because it exists.
Can a Housewife Buy LIC Term Insurance?
Yes, under LIC’s Jeevan Raksha plan. LIC’s own website says this plan is also available for housewives.
But “available” does not mean “automatically approved.” LIC checks every application.
Do I need my own salary?
No, not always. LIC may look at your family’s income instead. It may ask for papers like your husband’s income proof and details of his life insurance.
Can I show income I don’t earn to get more cover?
Can a housewife get ₹50 lakh or ₹1 crore cover?
Not under Jeevan Raksha. The highest cover in this plan is ₹24 lakh per person for anyone, man or woman. For homemakers, LIC decides the cover for each person, and it can be lower than ₹24 lakh. Your LIC advisor can tell you the exact amount for your family.
What if I have not passed Class 10, or my husband has no life insurance?
These things can affect a homemaker’s application. Ask your LIC advisor whether another option fits you. Also, if your husband has no life insurance, his cover may be the bigger gap. Check both of you together.
A homemaker’s work has real value
Meet Sana, 34, from Ghaziabad. She has two children. Every day she:
- Gets the children ready for school and helps with homework
- Cooks every meal and runs the house
- Looks after her mother-in-law
- Handles doctor visits, bills and family plans
If her family had to pay people to do this, it could cost around ₹18,000 a month.
This number shows how much Sana’s work is worth. It is not the cover LIC will approve. LIC decides that separately. The goal is to see the family’s risk clearly, and then find the best protection actually available.

Which one should you look at?

- Need very high cover (₹2 crore or more)? Look at Bima Kavach.
- Want to cover a home loan or other loan? Look at Digi Credit Life or Yuva Credit Life.
- Want the simplest standard plan? Look at Saral Jeevan Bima.
Do Women Pay Less Than Men?
Often yes, in LIC’s term plans. Jeevan Raksha and several other LIC term plans have special rates for women. This is because, on average, women live longer.
But this does not mean every woman pays less than every man. The price depends on your age, health, smoking habit, cover amount, how many years you choose and how you pay.
To compare fairly, keep everything the same: same plan, same age, same cover, same years, same smoking status.

How Much Term Insurance Does a Woman Need?
Use this simple formula:
Don’t count the same thing twice.
Example 1: Working woman helping her parents (Illustration only)
Neha, 29, gives her parents ₹25,000 a month. They need it for 15 more years.
₹25,000 × 12 × 15 = ₹45 lakh
Example 2: Working mother (Illustration only)
Home loan ₹25 lakh + children’s education ₹20 lakh + family support ₹30 lakh − existing savings and cover ₹15 lakh = ₹60 lakh
Notice: ₹60 lakh is more than Jeevan Raksha’s ₹24 lakh limit. This mother should look at LIC’s higher-cover plans too.
Example 3: Single mother (Illustration only)
She should add up her children’s monthly costs, school and college costs, any loans and emergency money, then subtract her savings and existing insurance.
These are rough examples to help you think. Prices rise over time and savings grow, so real numbers will be different. Your exact need depends on your own family.
Documents You May Need
| What | Examples |
|---|---|
| Who you are | Aadhaar, PAN or other accepted ID |
| Your age | Accepted date-of-birth proof |
| Where you live | Address proof |
| Income | Salary slips, Form 16, ITR, or other accepted proof |
| Education | Certificate, if the plan asks for it |
| Health | Health questions, and medical tests if needed |
| Nominee | Name and relationship of the person who gets the money |
| Homemakers | Extra family income papers, if asked |
The exact list depends on the plan and your situation.
Big Life Changes Women Should Know About
Pregnancy: Tell LIC if you are pregnant and share any health issues honestly. LIC decides whether to accept, wait or ask for more checks.
Marriage and name change: Update your name and papers with LIC after marriage.
Divorce or separation: Your nominee does not change by itself. Fill LIC’s form to change it.
Leaving your job: If you bought the policy while working and later stay at home, it can continue subject to the policy terms and remaining in force, including paying premiums when due.
Widowed or divorced, with no regular income: You may still be able to apply. Ask for a check based on your own situation.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Picking only the cheapest plan. Cheap is good only if the cover is enough.
- Hiding health problems. This can lead to a rejected claim.
- Buying too little cover. Your family may still struggle.
- Thinking every homemaker qualifies. LIC has conditions.
- Treating term insurance like savings. It protects. It does not give money back.
- Forgetting the nominee. Check it after marriage, a baby, or divorce.
How to Apply for LIC Term Insurance
- Write down who depends on you.
- Work out how much cover your family needs.
- Check the plan’s rules (age, income, education).
- Read the plan’s official brochure.
- Get a premium quote.
- Fill the form honestly, including your health details.
- Give the papers LIC asks for.
- Do medical tests if LIC asks.
- Read your policy carefully when it arrives. You get 30 days to return it if you don’t like the terms.
- Tell a trusted family member where your policy papers are.

Frequently Asked Questions

4. Can a homemaker apply without salary slips?

It can. LIC may look at the family’s income when a homemaker applies.

Yes. Jeevan Raksha and several other LIC term plans have special rates for women.
7. Can unmarried women buy LIC term insurance?
Yes, if they meet the plan’s rules.

11. Can I apply while pregnant?

12. What happens after marriage or divorce?
Update your name and nominee with LIC. The nominee does not change on its own.
13. Can my husband pay my premium?
The person who owns the policy and pays is called the proposer. The person whose life is covered is the life assured. Husbands and wives can usually insure each other, but ask your LIC advisor what this plan allows before you apply.
14. Should my husband’s policy be under the Married Women’s Property Act (MWPA)?
When a married man takes a policy under MWPA for his wife and children, the money goes to them and is generally safe from his lenders. This must be chosen when buying the policy. Ask if the plan allows it.
15. Is death during childbirth covered?
Term plans pay for death from illness or medical problems during the policy term, if the policy is active and the claim is accepted. Suicide-related claims are governed by the exact suicide clause in the applicable LIC policy document, including the stated time period, premium definition and exclusions. Check the policy wording.
16. What if I become a homemaker after buying as a working woman?
Your policy can continue subject to its terms and remaining in force, including paying premiums when due.

19. Do I get money back at the end?
No. Pure term plans like Jeevan Raksha pay nothing if you survive the policy term.
Final Thoughts
A woman’s value to her family is not measured by salary alone.
A working woman may pay bills, fees and her parents’ costs. A homemaker gives care that would cost a lot to replace. Both deserve protection.
Start with your family’s real needs. Check what you are eligible for. Be honest in your form. Don’t rush, and don’t pick a random number.
